Reservoir Surveillance

A key weakness in reservoir management is related to poor reservoir characterization and surveillance. The challenge is in the subsurface uncertainties and low resolution of seismic imaging to identify key geological features and un-swept zones. Cross-well electromagnetic (EM) imaging is a revived surveillance technology that can provide valuable insights into the fluid saturation distribution and reservoir heterogeneity. This imaging technology, however, requires solving an inverse problem for the EM signal and the flow. The objective of this project is to develop a model that fully couples the EM imaging (Maxwell’s equations) with the multiphase fluid flow (Darcy’s law and transport equations). Another technology that we are investigating alongside EM is tracers.
