Welcome to ARMS: Advanced Reservoir Modeling & Simulation Group.  The ARMS-Group is led by Associate Professor Hussein Hoteit of the Energy Resources and Petroleum Engineering Program in the Physical Science and Engineering Division at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) and is part of the Ali I. Al-Naimi Petroleum Engineering Research Center.

Reservoir modeling improves the probability of success and fidelity in decision making about reservoir development and optimization. Simulation allows both researchers and practitioners to understand fundamental flow mechanisms, capture uncertainties and probabilistic ranges, and optimize development scenarios. The primary focus of our group is on reservoir modeling and simulation at both lab and field scales, as well as on other energy-related topics such as geothermal energy and CO2 sequestration. 




The industry interest in unlocking unconventional gas and liquid-rich hydrocarbon systems is likely to grow. In tight formation, the pore size distribution is 2-3 orders of magnitude smaller than those in conventional reservoirs. This complexity usually introduces significant impact on hydrocarbon phase continuity and capillary forces. Some major challenges in modeling unconventional resources include the understanding of the fundamental flow mechanisms, phase behavior aspects, geomechanical effects, natural fractures contribution and the significance of the stimulated reservoir volume from micro-seismic events. The objective of this research is to leverage on data analytics, analytical-based methods such as rate and pressure transient analyses (RTA, PTA), and reservoir simulations to develop a modeling workflow for unconventional resources.

MS and PhD Positions


Fully funded graduate student positions are available for outstanding full-time students wishing to pursue a Master of Science degree and/or PhD with Dr. Hussein Hoteit at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). 

The successful candidates/s will work with national and international partners.

Applications for MS and Ph.D. positions must be submitted through KAUST’s official website, All applicants should have a strong background in: geophysics, physics, applied math, numerical methods, fluid mechanics and/or chemistry.

Depending on the stage of their careers, applicants should not only have graduated with excellent grades, but should also have a competitive paper track record that proves their scientific experience and excellence in their research field.
