Overview

Welcome to ARMS: Advanced Reservoir Modeling & Simulation Group.  The ARMS-Group is led by Associate Professor Hussein Hoteit of the Energy Resources and Petroleum Engineering Program in the Physical Science and Engineering Division at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) and is part of the Ali I. Al-Naimi Petroleum Engineering Research Center.

Reservoir modeling improves the probability of success and fidelity in decision making about reservoir development and optimization. Simulation allows both researchers and practitioners to understand fundamental flow mechanisms, capture uncertainties and probabilistic ranges, and optimize development scenarios. The primary focus of our group is on reservoir modeling and simulation at both lab and field scales, as well as on other energy-related topics such as geothermal energy and CO2 sequestration.

Research

 

Chemical EOR including polymer and surfactant injections is a mature and proven technology that can be used for mobility control and to mobilize trapped oil. The key challenges are related to assessing the right reservoir conditions and to reducing the cost. In this research, we focus on developing cost-effective chemical EOR schemes by optimizing the chemical slug sizes that can be designed carefully to the reservoir conditions. We also investigate the potential of chemical usage for other applications such as well conformance. For instance, we have developed with researchers from ARAMCO a patented scheme that uses specific types of micro-emulsion for well conformance to address issues related to early water breakthrough and poor sweep efficiency.

MS and PhD Positions

Fully funded graduate student positions are available for outstanding full-time students wishing to pursue a Master of Science degree and/or PhD with Dr. Hussein Hoteit at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). 

The successful candidates/s will work with national and international partners.

Applications for MS and Ph.D. positions must be submitted through KAUST’s official website, All applicants should have a strong background in: geophysics, physics, applied math, numerical methods, fluid mechanics and/or chemistry.

Depending on the stage of their careers, applicants should not only have graduated with excellent grades, but should also have a competitive paper track record that proves their scientific experience and excellence in their research field.
